COSTUME - FREDDY FAZBEAR

This costume piece was created for a content creator based in Japan. It is an exact replica of a character from a video game- Five Nights at Freddy’s 2.

The costume head is created from upholstery foam, EVA foam, fleece, and DIY Christmas ornaments (eyes). It is entirely hand-painted!

This piece took me several months to complete while working on it on and off.

The process starts as usual: drafting and prototyping.

For this costume, I was able to find a 3D model of the character from the game to aid me while I carved it to shape.

It took a combination of 1 and 1/2 thick upholstery foam to create the shape of the head. I use placeholder features made out of cardstock to make sure the character looks accurate.

The eyes come after carving out the general shape of the head.

Because they are DIY plastic Christmas ornaments, they are easy to cut, solder, and dremel. I then back them with mesh and paint them.

I use a sponge to paint the color on the mesh in order for the paint to not clog the holes, and therefore block vision. Then I use a VERY small paintbrush to paint the pupils.

More EVA foam pieces are attached in this step, such as the teeth, eyelids, ear joints, and hat.

The hat was extremely fun to make! It is attached magnetically and painted to look like old, rusting metal, fitting for the animatronic character.

The teeth are layered EVA foam covered in epoxy putty to give them a rotting, chipped look, and they are painted accordingly.

I have also started fabricating the head in this step. I do this by covering the entire head in masking tape to get the pattern, and then transfer it onto the fabric of my choice. It is entirely sewn together, some by hand and some by machine.

Here the entire head is fabricated, and I have begun the painting process. This is all done by hand to get the detailing and weathering that suits the character best, since my client wanted a game-accurate costume.

The final product also included a squeaker in the nose, per the client’s request!
